The Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee continues its inquiry into high streets and town centres in 2030 at 4pm on Monday 22 October.

Scope of the session

The first session will consider the future of high streets and town centres from the perspective of landlords and asset management firms. It will examine the role landlords play in sustaining the wider area their properties operate in. It will also investigate how they calculate rent levels and lease lengths, and tenants can be better supported in difficult financial periods.

The second session will look at how town planning can address the challenges facing the high street and town centres. It will consider how national and local planning policy can provide for growth and diversification, and maintain high streets as community focal points in cases where retail becomes unviable. Witnesses represent Royal Town Planning Institute, Birmingham City Council and Urban Pollinators.
